Rookie of the Year?

Marcus Thompson tonight on Twitter: More ROY fodder @DIMEMag @StephenCurry30 just broke the record for most made treys in a season for an NBA rookie (159). Kawakami: Here’s how. Bleacher Report after the other night in Minnesota: Curry fell two rebounds and three steals short of accomplishing a very rare quadruple-double. Wizards coach Flip Saunders: “He’s going to be a very good player in this league for a long time.”

An early SCT preview

Bleacher Report:

Davidson is a team that could be spurred on by the home-town crowd when the tournament comes to Charlotte in a little over a week for the 90th renewal of the tourney. Davidson probably stands the best chance of winning the SoCon title of the teams that play on Friday.

I’ll buy that.

The Davidson treatment?

Jameson Fleming:

Despite the not-so-great profile, most pundits argued Stephen Curry should go dancing no matter what if Davidson were to lose in its conference tournament. The argument never came to fruition as the Wildcats didn’t lose in their tournament.

Fast-forward to this season. Cornell, the preseason Ivy League favorite is following the same path as Stephen Curry’s Wildcats.

Not really. That year’s Davidson team lost their “big games” in the regular season. This year’s Cornell team has won some of them. The similarity: Davidson ’08 wouldn't have gotten an at-large, and neither will Cornell ’10. Sorry. If you’re Davidson, if you’re Cornell, win your league or else. The difference: The Southern Conference gives its bid to its best team over a weekend. The Ivy League gives its bid to its best team over a season.

Making the argument

Steven Resnick at Bleacher Report:

The more I think about Stephen Curry, the more I believe he should have stayed in college for another year at Davidson.

No. Wrong. First, he wouldn’t have been drafted as high as seventh because of what he would’ve been asked to do at Davidson this year, and because of the quality and depth of the coming draft class, too. Second, the rest of the guys on the team this year, the older guys but especially the younger guys, wouldn’t have developed the way they’re having to develop right now. Third, what we would’ve seen this year not only wouldn’t have been Davidson basketball -- it wouldn’t have been basketball, period, not really. It would’ve been a show, packaged and sold as such by the American sports entertainment industrial complex, a show that would’ve been titillating for many but ultimately burdensome and unfulfilling for the participants and also the closer, more thoughtful spectators.

University alert

Bleacher Report:

Undeterred, Curry decided to accept an offer from tiny Davidson University, and that is where his legend starts.

College. Davidson College.

Panting from the stands

Kid on Bleacher Report: The announcer is like, you have to get out on him, I looked at my brother and said, “Is this announcer high, I know Steph is a great shooter, but he was like 40 feet from the basket, and the announcer is criticizing the defense, you’ve got to be kidding me.”

5.26.2009

The building narrative

Someone named Rob Dauster:

But as a junior, Curry’s role vastly changed with the graduation of point guard Jason Richards. Already a proven shooter, this allowed Curry to show off what he could do as a point guard, and for the most part, the season was a (personal) success.

The parentheses, I guess, are necessary due to the team’s 27-win failure.

Washington?

Jarrett Carter:

His work ethic is legit, his media presence is refined and humorous, and he would fit in well with the Washington community. Some may call it a long shot at the fifth pick, but with Stephen Curry, you have to believe it would be a long shot with a great chance of going in.

3.30.2009

A real school?

Will Bryan:

Because of transfer rules, Seth will have to sit out a season and wouldn’t be able to face Stephen even if the Davidson guard decides to return for his senior year.

However, in 2010, the entire country will set their eyes on Duke to provide a misguided answer to an over-asked question: How would Stephen have fared at a real school?

1.01.2009

Grace under pressure

Elizabeth Carlton from Charleston:

The Davidson Wildcats know that in their conference especially, they are not the darlings. They are the prize.

Bleacher Report

Stephen is the No. 1 guard: Curry is also fifth in the country in assist ratio at 42 percent, which means when he’s on the floor he assists on 42 percent of his team’s field goals. Considering Curry also scores at will, the majority of Davidson’s baskets when Curry is on the floor, which is 86 percent of the time, somehow go through his hands.
