A note on odd

Been going through a bunch of material for a new project -- details to come on that -- and came across this fun bit from last November from Will:

As writers like Scoop Jackson try to come up with new angles and names for this whole Davidson/Curry thing, it seems like one adjective has been glaringly omitted.

Odd.

I mean we’ve danced around it with terms like unique and special and one-of-a-kind, but frankly Davidson basketball can be downright odd.

Case in point: As we were watching highlights of Kansas’ elaborate banner-raising ceremony last night, I was told of the story of Davidson’s own Elite 8 banner-raising ceremony.

It consisted of a guy on a ladder and three Sports Info staffers standing in an empty gym clapping.

Upon hearing the clapping from the hallway, a skinny kid wearing a hoodie bounded onto the court and started yelling.

“Steph, stop yelling at the guy on the leader. You’ll make him fall off.”

So the NCAA’s current points leader, first team All-American and now-leading candidate for National Player of the Year runs into the Sports Info office and turns up Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and sings it a little off-key.

We are odd.

Hard

Will Bryan:

A senior year at Davidson full of double teams and overbearing responsibility and frustrated mini huddles on the court isn’t what he wants.

Owning the decision

Will Bryan:

My overriding hope from all of this is that Curry is the one who breaks this story. He has endured so much in double teams, autograph seekers and fan hecklers that he deserves to be the first one to tell us all. We don’t need a text message to someone on a message board to spoil this for him. He deserves to see utter surprise on the faces of the assembled media at 11:31 AM.

A real school?

Will Bryan:

Because of transfer rules, Seth will have to sit out a season and wouldn’t be able to face Stephen even if the Davidson guard decides to return for his senior year.

However, in 2010, the entire country will set their eyes on Duke to provide a misguided answer to an over-asked question: How would Stephen have fared at a real school?

Here now

Left Greater Tampa so early this morning the clerk at the 7-Eleven told me to have a nice night. Still down there, in my luxury apartment home, on the futon sleeping soundly when I left, is Davidson man Will Bryan. He’s in town to work and network at the Super Bowl.

(Update: At Belk, meanwhile, now 22 minutes to tip, both White Lobsters are in the house -- the one with the costume in the front row behind the near basket, and also the one with the blond, spiky hair going through layup lines.)

Elon last night

Fourth game in eight days. Third league game in five. Don’t mind us. Just coming through.

Burlington: Twenty seconds later, Curry tossed in the first bucket in what became a 39-point pile as Davidson, the gold standard of Southern Conference men’s basketball, buried Elon 83-68 to polish off another victory Wednesday night at Belk Arena.

“We couldn’t guard him. He almost single-handedly beat us by himself, really,” Elon forward Ola Atoyebi said of Curry. “We just let him play. We weren’t physical enough on him. We let him get going, and once he gets going ... .”

By now, most of America probably knows how that statement ends.

Charlotte: There are times when Davidson guard Stephen Curry simply takes charge of a basketball game and you sense that the other team really doesn’t have a say in the matter.

Will Bryan: Steph did his thing again. It actually made a message boarder eek that he’s back (he’s back?!?). Dagger three at the end of the half off a 50-50 ball that made new Elon assistant Wes Miller slam his clipboard and Bob McKillop nod.
