Bilas on March

On upsets: “Davidson was not as good as a lot of people. They weren’t as good as Georgetown, but Georgetown lost to them.”

Coaching moves

Katz: Seton Hall should try to woo someone like McCaffery or Davidson’s Bob McKillop, but the school is also smart enough to know that both coaches are in good situations. McKillop loves his life in the Davidson community north of Charlotte. Why would someone want to leave what makes sense for the craziness of the bottom of the Big East in the competitive New York metro area? Seton Hall?

To win 4 at the SCT?

Chattanooga Times Free Press: The College of Charleston came close last year only to run out of air against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the men's championship game in McKenzie Arena. Elon won three games the year before and lost in the fourth. Furman had the same fortune in 2002.

Some thoughts from Davidson

1. Brendan is playing very fine basketball, and really hitting right now on those beautiful, backspun parabolas of his.

2. Another mostly unshowy but very effective night for Will: 10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, zero turnovers.

3. The offensive statistics from last night were indicative of not only a capable offense but also an unbothered offense -- 47.5 percent from the floor, 43.3 percent from three, and both those numbers were higher for most of the game, and then of course the 21-to-9 assist-to-turnover ratio. At one point it was 21 to 6.

4. Those guys are better than their record. Doesn’t it feel like you keep hearing that from opposing players and coaches? Last night it was Penn guard Zack Rosen: “They’ve got confidence in what they do, and they stick to it. I don’t think they’ve lost to any chumps.”

5. McKillop: “Roles have been defined.”

Three headlines

New York: No. 11 Butler Is Sluggish in Its Opener. Baltimore: Sloppy win gives Butler work to do. South Bend: Butler wakes up, gets by Davidson.

These two teams

One more thing from the sky before we land in Indy: Davidson College and Butler University, with enrollments of 1,700 and 4,000 students, respectively, have combined to win 170 basketball games over the last three years -- 85 apiece.

Davidson in the fall

Because down here in Florida trees don’t get like this.

The town’s branding plan

Davidson:

“Over 25 individual and group interviews are scheduled over three days to immerse the consultants into the Davidson community and psyche,” said Sandy Lemons, downtown director.

The Davidson community and psyche? Consultants? Three days? That’s a small window to understand a big thing.

What would you tell them?

From Claire’s memoir seminar

Mary Karr in her introduction to the 10-year anniversary edition of The Liars’ Club:

Its publication constructed for me ... what I’d hankered so desperately for as a dreamy kid comforted only by reading: that mythic village of like-minded souls who bloom together by sharing old tales -- the kind that fire you up and set you loose, the true kind. So come on in.

Cats on Main

Grand opening Saturday morning at 10.

The ‘Cats on Main building at 131 N. Main Street was constructed in 1914 and operated for many years as White's Drug Store. In 1965, it became Parks Rexall Drug Store. The building was purchased by Tom Clark in 1984, and for the past 25 years, the building served as a retail outlet and museum for collectible figurines sold by Cairn Studios. The offerings included gnomes crafted by building owner and sculptor Tom Clark, a Davidson College religion professor from 1958 to 1985.

And I’ll be in town. That worked well. DavidsonNews.net: big wooden scissors.

Stephen Curry of Davidson College

Scott:

The Curry family had a sign at their table that read “Hi, Davidson” that attempted to get in front of ESPN’s cameras several times.

“That was just our way of saying hi to the community back there,” Curry said. “Just showing that I’m still wearing Davidson on my heart even though I have a Golden State hat on now.”

Thoughts at this moment

E-mail to some Davidson friends today:

Back when he was making his decision, then still to some extent when he made it, I figured I’d have some mixed emotions come draft day: happy for him, but wondering what might have been, or something like that. No. None of that. I’m looking forward to tonight, unconditionally, really happy that our guy has gone out over this last month or so and done so well in workouts and moved himself into a very fine and deserved position heading into this evening. And I’m also totally looking forward to next year, games at Belk, Blue Moons at the Brick House, a new team still playing what we’ve come to know over so many years as Davidson basketball.

Davidson and Gonzaga

Linked. Now scheduled to meet again next year. Cool. P-I.
